August 25, 2014: The Tender Mercy of Meatloaf

Hola familia!! Como están?? I figured out how to make question marks by accident on this keyboard. Happy day because that was driving me crazy!! Your emails are awesome! My family is the best and super funny. I laugh during everyone’s emails. Seriously, my abs are getting ripped from reading emails. I can’t believe school is starting soon. That is so weird! I am happy I do not have to deal with tests and other stuff. I will relish in that while I am here. But every day is a lot like school, I study and then go out and translate in my mind what everyone is saying to me. Oh the misión, just as tough as it is good! Sometimes it is like trying to take a drink out of a fire hose, but it is nothing I cannot handle!

So this week, I learned how to make the best tortillas in the world and lots of other food, too. I think I might actually have a shot at being a good chef! Go me!! I will send those pics in a minute. The food here is super tasty; I will need to watch it or I will not come back looking the same! Luckily, Hermana Sutton and I have decided to assist each other and make sure we don’t over eat, and we walk everywhere and run in the mornings, I think I will be okay. We are also teaching piano lessons to the family we live by, it was super fun! It required some patience though, but overall, I liked it. We had meatloaf this week YIPEE! There is an investigator we found that only speaks English and is from America. He insisted that we had an American meal on Saturday. And then it was my favorite one, tender mercies people. Funny story of the week, Hermana Sutton talks in her sleep!!! Oh my goodness, we had a conversation last night after she stole my blanket in her sleep. It was so funny. She also sat up in her bed and said Hermana Anderton, don’t you just love our fuzzy slippers?? It was 2 am and really random...and really funny. I love having her for a companion! We think a lot alike and just tell each other how it is. Last Monday, we took the wrong bus to get back to our área and ended up clear in Timbuctoo. We found out later that there are not any sisters in that área, I suppose that’s why we got weird looks. We are now very cautious about buses ha-ha. Oh the adventures of missions. I am so glad I get to go on them with Hermana Sutton!

Okay, so this is my little uplifting message for you all-Go watch videos on Mormon Chanel! Oh I love them so much! We had an open house this weekend and we got to watch those during a meeting with the President to pick out ones to show at the meeting. I walked out of there ready to take on the world. On Saturday at the open house, our subject was the Plan of Salvation and Eternal Families. I really missed you guys during that. But then the President came in and suggested in front of the people that I get up and bear my testimony in English...even though nobody knew how to speak it. He wanted people to feel it though, and learn the Spirit language I guess. I was nervous because he knows English and I didn’t know what I was going to say. I ended up talking about how much Heavenly Father love us and that I knew he loved me and sent me here to Mexico. I shared the experience I had on the plane here when I was getting super nervous and was praying for peace and then I looked out the window at the stars and thought of dad, and realized I was off to serve my Heavenly Father, and I wanted to do my best because he is my dad, too. After that, I felt so much peace and love and I now know without a doubt that He is always there for me! I said it wasn’t easy being here but that Christ was helping me every step of the way and I knew I would be okay. Almost all the women in the room were crying and saying they felt the Spirit when I testified of Heavenly Father’s love. And I KNOW HE LOVES US ALL SO MUCH!!! So that’s it, remember you are loved!! I love you all so much and miss you lots!! Take care and keep having a great time!!

XOXOXOXOXO

Love,

Hermana Anderton

August 18, 2014: The Saturday of Psychos

First of all HAPPY ANNIVERSARY MOM AND DAD!!! 26 years....that's a long time. And onto eternity we go right? Also, something to add to my packing list: Not Cetaphil....I want Noxema because my face is always a little burned. And can I have some Skittles? Anyways, that story about Kennedy with the cops is super funny! I remember my first time I got in trouble at the park, I thought you guys were going to kill me too. Ha-ha, good thing we have good parents!! And Kennedy, it probably won't be the last time something like that happens to you. Don't sweat it. :) I was wondering if I could get family conversion stories with names and dates. I want to share those with people and the only one I know is Robert Allen's. I did go buy new shoes, I think they were around $70...I hope that was okay. I wanted a good pair. They are working well and I switch them off with my others so my blisters aren't as bad.

This week was CRAZY!! I mean it...we had what I call "The Saturday of Psychos." We were literally running away from crazy drunk men at 2 in the afternoon. We were waiting for the other Hermanas to go to lunch with a member and we were waiting on the corner of a convenience store when it all started. We literally were running around the block to avoid all these weird guys who wanted to talk to the American missionaries. We were laughing pretty hard by the end because it felt like we couldn't escape them! They were everywhere. Oye, only in Juarez. But it's all good, don't sweat it too much! I don't feel unsafe here because we follow the Spirit and are cautious. I'm not worried at all about it! I met one of the Mitton's cousins here! His name is Elder Robbins, small world! Carlos was baptized on Saturday, he was the other Hermanas investigator, but it was still good! There is a lady here in my Ward who is just like Mrs. McDowell! She even looks like her! We went to visit her house and she was crazy funny and just did the most random things! I sat there most of the time trying to decide who she reminded me of, and then it clicked. I get a kick out of her. We moved into our new house!! Oh it's so cute! It's the perfect missionary house. I don't have the address, next week...I promise!!! When we were moving in, it was 8:30 at night and dark...and then the lights weren't working because the lady who owns the house didn't pay the bill!!! So, we got candles and just unpacked the stuff we needed for the night. The things you experience on the mission....speaking of fun things; the buses here are INSANE! I don't like it when I have to stand up on them because I really struggle to keep my footing. We go on them every once in a while to meetings, but every time is an adventure! I love my companion so much! She is so awesome and we have so much in common! But, we also have differences to keep life interesting. She is very patient with me and has been so helpful with everything. I am so lucky to have had her as a companion! We have found a few good investigators now, so I think we are getting into the mode of things! I'm controlling the weather down here with my prayers, so the days may start off pretty hot but then a storm or clouds roll in about 3 or 4pm ha-ha.

Well, last night I was thinking about how much I needed to tell you something, and now I'm at a loss...so I guess that's it. We have so much to be thankful for! I have definitely learned how blessed I am! Enjoy the little things in life like hot showers people! Oh, ps...Do you think I look like Lana del Rey?? I've been told that now multiple times but I don't see it!!!! Anyways...I love you all so much and look forward to your emails every week! I have the best family in the entire world!!! I am doing fine so don't worry about this person here! I pray for you guys all the time and hope all continues to be well at home! I was really super sad to hear about John, I will continue to keep him and the family in my prayers. :'(

Love you all and have a great week!!

August 11, 2014: Everyone knows I'm a Gringa!

Hola familia! How is everyone? Lagoon and Park City sounded like a blast! I am glad you guys had fun!! I love you all so much!!

Well, this week I have seen and experienced things I did not even know were out there! But I still love my mission! It’s super-hot here. I am about 5 shades darker than I was when I got here.  I think I am starting to blend in!! Not really...everyone here knows I am a gringa. But there are clouds sometimes in the sky...oh I am so grateful for clouds. Oh random, can you send me face wash, granola bars, 20 of those small CTR rings that are green in Spanish for the Primary, and mints please...those are some things I need and cannot get what I want here. There is no face wash so I need that for sure! Okay, back to my train of thought....Hermana Sutton is the BEST!! If you think she sounds cool on her blog, you should meet her in person. She is a great trainer; the Lord has really blessed me! She likes to sing and run. I love it!! So we go running every morning and sing hymns when we contact people. The ward here is really into missionary work too, the Bishop is young. He has a baby and it’s his first kid, but he is a huge advocate of missionary work so I think this ward will be great to work with. The people are so friendly and loving and the primary kids said they would help me with my Spanish if I helped them with English, ha-ha. Oh man, I have the Spanish mind of a 5 month old, but it’s okay...I will one day be fluent! I am trying and being patient with myself. The food here is really good! It’s sometimes really spicy, but it hasn’t made me sick. We are moving houses this week, so I will give you an address to look up next week on Google Earth. This week we got caught in a rainstorm and got soaked in the middle of the day. It just came and went super-fast!! I got drenched. I’ve been praying for it to cool down here, and so it’s actually rained a bit. The streets flooded pretty badly one night, as you will see in the picture I sent. I am loving my mission, it’s NOT easy and it’s HARD work, but I don’t mind working hard so it’s all good. Opening a new area is hard because right now we are searching for investigators, and some of them are not as interested in our message as they are in talking to Americans. So we have to be pretty direct with some people sometimes. But we found one this week who I think will be great to teach. It was an adjustment coming here to Mexico for sure, but I have survived and it’s becoming my new normal. I have just accepted the fact my clothes will never be completely clean and that my shoes won’t stay shiny for more than 20 minutes. My feet have blisters, I’ve got a pretty bad sunburn, and I’m exhausted, but I AM SO HAPPY! I think it’s because it’s impossible to be sad when you’re doing the right thing WITH a right attitude. I came here deciding I was going to love it and I have. I love the people here! They are so warm and kind and easy to connect with even though I don’t talk that well. They are patient and will repeat themselves slowly, give me time to translate, and then try to spit out some Spanish back. I know I’m where I need to be. So don’t worry too much about me. We have so much to be grateful for!!

You guys should start reading Our Heritage from the missionary library. It’s my soap opera! I look forward to reading it every morning! It really motivates me and reminds me how much I love this Gospel! Ah, HAPPY FACE!!! Okay, so everyone be safe and have a great week!! I love you guys!! XOXOXXO. And please...send me music!!

Con Amor,
Hermana Anderton
